I create content for a living, both writing and producing video content, so it has been almost two decades since I've done any creative writing. My father has written poetry his entire life, so I was encouraged by him to keep up my creative writing as a hobby, but life happens, and the pen was put aside as the bills stacked up.
Championing Juneteenth in Changing Times
I didn't learn about Juneteenth in elementary school, middle school, high school, or college. It wasn't taught in American history classes which included the Revolutionary War, the Louisiana Purchase, the Civil War, Reconstruction, the Transcontinental Railroad, both World Wars, the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, and even the Cold War. Our textbooks didn't include anything about …
Southern Squared Learns
While we are confined to our homes and practicing social distancing 6 feet away from each other, I hope everyone has taken time to learn something new between work assignments and home schooling their children. Most of the things I have been learning can be shared with children and can be a learning experience for …
Atlanta’s turbulent relationship with historic preservation
If you're from Atlanta, you've heard the jokes. Atlanta loves to tear down history and build new or just make everything parking. In 1959, Atlanta literally razed a 80 year old, 7 story building to build a parking deck which still stands today, 61 years later. History in Atlanta’s Backyard
Last night, I attended the D-Day Commemoration at Atlanta History Center, kicking off my week of commemoration of American military. I may start calling this Memorial Week instead of Memorial Day. I also had a chance to do a behind-the-scenes tour of The Swan House, part of the Atlanta History Center. The D-Day conversation was …
After hours in Atlanta this summer
I wrote this while I was working at Georgia Tech for the Office of Conference Services (2014-2019). The choices are endless if you are looking for fun after hours in Atlanta. Options vary depending on the age group of guests, but there is something for any age staying with us at Georgia Tech. At Georgia …
